Every Friday, Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI) releases its estimate of the U.S., Canadian, and international rig count. Usually, I let these updates go without comment, as the weekly changes are small. The “big picture” trends only come into focus when you zoom out and look at months’ or years’ worth of data. I think I’ve done a good job of documenting one of these phenomena, but a poor job of alerting you to another. Something in Friday’s release really snuck up on me. I should have been paying better attention.

The first key trend is the dramatic shift from vertical to directional and horizontal drilling. Drilling in tight gas shales used to be thoroughly unconventional. Following the success of Mitchell Energy (acquired by Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) in 2002) and others in the Barnett shale, however, it didn’t take long for shale plays to dominate the drilling landscape. Nowadays, it seemingly takes a contrarian to avoid the shale and granite wash plays that firms like Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) and EnCana (NYSE: ECA) are exploiting so eagerly.

A year ago, there were 468 vertical rigs and 658 directional/horizontal rigs running in the U.S. Today, those numbers are 489 and 918, with the horizontal rig count up 63%.

With my early coverage of plays like the Marcellus and the Eagle Ford, as well as international developments, I like to think that I have kept Fools well-apprised of key shale gas goings-on. An area where my coverage could have been better over the past few years is in the Bakken and other onshore oil plays.

To be fair, I have mentioned the Bakken in 34 separate articles since 2008. I quoted EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG) in my first mention of the play, saying it would someday be recognized as “a very, very big oilfield.” I also told you that the Bakken was blooming in mid-2008. So this hasn’t been a huge blind spot, exactly. Jenson Button shrugged off the controversy surrounding the new McLaren as Formula One today hit the track running in typically contentious style.

A debate is raging in F1 regarding an innovative aerodynamic concept on the car that has been passed legal, but has had nearly every other team principal and engineering guru mumbling words of discontent.

The design employs Lewis Hamilton and Button to close off a vent in the cockpit of their car using their legs, which in turn helps to stall the rear wing for extra straight-line speed.

As it is the drivers doing the moving, rather than any part of the car which would be illegal, FIA race steward Charlie Whiting has given the McLaren the all-clear.

Following today’s two practice sessions ahead of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, reigning champion Button and 2008 king Hamilton were on the pace, finishing fourth and second-quickest respectively behind Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg, with Michael Schumacher third.

Button was initially coy when asked about the device before then adding: "Our wing is our wing, and that’s the way it is.

"There’s no problem with it as it’s been passed by the authorities. It’s an innovative design and it seems to be working well.

"We all want more downforce, but aerodynamically and with our straight-line speed we’re reasonably happy with where we are."

Renault’s managing director Bob Bell has today been one of the most outspoken critics of Whiting’s decision, pointing an accusing finger at the FIA.

"It is fundamentally clear the McLaren wing design is totally illegal," complained Bell.

"They have driven a cart horse through the spirit of the rules and regulations. They have opened up another arms race.

"It’s going to cost everybody a lot of money. The governing bodies need to be a lot stronger with these things."

LIVERMORE — A proposed project would demolish a group of 70-year-old rental units on the south side of College Avenue and create new townhouses. The City Council on Monday will consider a plan to redevelop the 38,000-square-foot site west of the Tokay Common condominiums. If approved, seven bungalow-style units dating to the 1930s would be torn down and replaced with seven two-story residences on individual lots, according to staff reports.Because the rental buildings proposed for demolition are more than 50 years old, special approval from the city’s historic preservation commission was required, said Livermore Senior Planner Scott Lee.”They were kind of dated and the (commission) concluded they were not historically significant enough to preserve,” he said.Neighbors have generally shown support for the project, which the Planning Commission unanimously approved Feb. 2. Two speakers at that meeting said they thought it would help enhance the neighborhood.Only one of the proposed units would face College Avenue. That 1,733-square foot residence would be designed as a detached house in order to “increase the impression of a single-family residential character of the neighborhood,” according to staff reports. The six remaining units, all 1,973 square feet each, would be attached in pairs. Each would include a private driveway and two-car garage.A private road off College Avenue would provide access to the Advertisementdevelopment, which would also include a 7,195-square-foot open-space area in the rear.In addition to providing emergency-vehicle access, the common space would feature a children’s play structure, a bench, a trellis and landscaping. – One thing you can say about the Hummer, roaring down the road, towering over subcompacts like an NBA center in a sea of toddlers: It always drew a reaction.
The beefy, military-inspired SUV began as a macho icon for enthusiasts like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who held photo ops in Hummers in his early days as governor. For others it was a symbol of excess, environmental ruin and tackiness — a view that seemed to grow in direct proportion to gas prices and economic distress.
And now the brand is likely no more. General Motors Co. said Wednesday its bid to sell Hummer to a Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer had collapsed. Government regulators in Beijing failed to approve the sale and GM said it would have no choice but to let the brand die, 18 years after its first and most enormous model started lumbering off the assembly line.
"Finally," said Ann Mesnikoff, director of the green transportation campaign at the Sierra Club in Washington. "The Hummer was the epitome of gas guzzling."
Schwarzenegger, who was instrumental in popularizing the vehicle, had a much different reaction two decades ago when he first saw the Hummer’s direct military ancestor. Then a body builder turned movie star, he was on his way to the set of "Kindergarten Cop" in Oregon when an Army convoy packed with Humvees thundered past.
"I put the brakes on," Schwarzenegger said at the 1992 ceremony that AM General held to start production of civilian Hummers. "Someone smashed into the back of me, but I just stared. ‘Oh my God, there is the vehicle,’ I said. And from then on, I was possessed."
Hummer’s earliest predecessor was the jeep, the boxy multipurpose vehicle built in large numbers for the Army in World War II. The jeep evolved into the Humvee, which saw heavy action — and entered Americans’ consciousness — during the Gulf War.
